IPL 2018 Match 5 Recap: Bravo Billings, What an innings!

Chennai Super Kings pulled off another heist in the first home game of the season, overcoming a massive target set by Kolkata Knight Riders to win by five wickets. The chase of 203 meant the tradition of the chasing team winning continued.

Like in the last game, Chennai again found themselves in the big hole at the halfway stage of the chase. But, it was Sam Billings this time who smashed a spectacular 56 from merely 23 balls with two four and five sixes to take Chennai home.

Billings featured in a steadying partnership of 54 from 30 balls to somehow keep Chennai in the chase. Dwayne Bravo again played his part with a first-ball six off the last over bowled by Vinay Kumar. Worse it was also a no ball. Ravindra Jadeja then finished off the match by lofting the bowler for a maximum.

Earlier, Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu got Chennai off to a spectacular start in chase of 203 before they lost their way, and finally regained ground at the end. Watson in particular was merciless blasting 42 with 3 fours and as many sixes. Ambati Rayudu contributed 39 as the opening pair added 75.

Chennai’s heist overshadowed a sensational batting effort by Andre Russell, who looted 88 in 36 balls. The knock which featured as many as 11 sixes made Chennai bowlers seem completely helpless. The whirlwind knock took them past 200 after they were 89 at the halfway stage.

Dinesh Karthik, Robin Uthappa and Chris Lynn all made quick fifties, before Russell’s blitz, but in the end Chennai again had enough firepower to see them through.
