IPL 2018 KXIP vs CSK Match 12 review: Chennai erred in sending Jadeja ahead of Bravo

Chennai Super Kings had pulled off two excellent chases against Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders in their previous two matches. They almost made it a hat-trick against Kings XI Punjab. Finding themselves in a similar situation, needing over 16 runs per over from the front four. MS Dhoni went hard, but fell short, by four runs.

Looking back, one feels that Chennai left it a bit too late. The fact that Dwayne Bravo just got to face one ball in the innings, hurt them in a big way. More so, since the batsman before him, Ravindra Jadeja played 13 balls for his 19 at a time when much more was needed. Of course, the tactic has worked for Chennai in the past, but on Sunday it backfired as Bravo just did not get a chance to make an impact.

The slow start by Chennai in the tough chase also made matters difficult for the visitors. Openers Shane Watson and Murali Vijay had strike rate in the 120s and last-match hero Sam Billings, even lower at 112. Ambati Rayudu ensured the team in which with an outside change with a fluent 49. However, Chennai just did not have enough firepower this time.

Earlier in the day, Kings XI Punjab’s decision to open the innings with Chris Gayle made the big difference. Proving he still has plenty to offer in T20s, the left-hander smashed 63 in 33 balls in typical Gayle fashion. There were good support acts from KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair and even Yuvraj Singh, which took Punjab closer to 200.

With the ball, the Punjab bowlers did well to strangle Chennai early on. The spin duo of Mujeeb ur Rahman and skipper Ravichandran Ashwin kept things tight. And, although Mohit Sharma ended up with expensive figures, the last over where he strangled Dhoni made all the difference.
